ZF 8HP Gearbox Price Guide Australia: 8HP45 to 8HP76 Costs
8HP45 · 8HP76 · Australia · buyer guide · price guide · ZF 8HP
Short version: a used ZF 8HP in Australia lands roughly between A$2,500 and A$10,000, and the single biggest driver is not the model badge. It is kilometres, variant, and what is actually bolted to the gearbox when it arrives.
We sell these boxes, so we can show you the real ladder instead of a vague range. Here is what our current stock looks like, and the logic behind every number.
What ZF 8HP gearboxes actually cost right now
Live catalogue pricing at the time of writing, all prices AUD, all genuine ZF units:
- ZF 8HP45, 200,000 km — A$2,500
- ZF 8HP45, 150,000 km — A$3,000
- ZF 8HP45, 110,000 km — A$3,500
- ZF 8HP76, 30,000 km — A$8,000
- ZF 8HP76, 15,000 km — A$9,000
- ZF 8HP76, 5,000 km — A$10,000
Read that ladder carefully, because it tells you more than any "from $X" headline. Inside the 8HP45 band, 90,000 km of difference is worth about A$1,000. Inside the 8HP76 band, 25,000 km of difference is worth A$2,000. The newer, lower-kilometre boxes do not get cheaper with age. They get bought.
Why the 8HP45 and 8HP76 sit so far apart
They are not the same product at different prices. The 8HP45 is the volume box. It came in huge numbers behind smaller petrol and diesel engines, so supply is deep and the price stays honest.
The 8HP76 is the one people actually want when they are chasing real torque capacity. It is rarer, it turns up with far fewer kilometres, and it is the correct starting point if you are building something that will genuinely see 1000HP or more. That is a specification decision, not a marketing one. If your build target is big power, an 8HP45 at A$2,500 is not a bargain, it is the wrong gearbox, and you will spend the difference twice.
If you are still deciding between variants, the 8HP51 vs 8HP76 vs 8HP90 comparison is the page to read before you spend anything.
What actually moves the price
Four things, in this order:
1. Kilometres and known history. A box with a documented 5,000 km behind it is not the same purchase as one with 200,000 km and no story. You are buying remaining clutch life, not just metal.
2. Variant and code. An 8HP45 is not an interchangeable part across every BMW. Bellhousing, bolt pattern, output flange and mechatronics differ. The code on the tag is what determines whether the box fits your car, and it is what determines what the box is worth to you.
3. What is included. Torque converter, mechatronics, harness, cooler lines, flexplate and mounts all change the real number. A cheap bare gearbox that needs a converter and a harness is not cheap. Always confirm exactly what ships in the crate.
4. Condition and provenance. A running take-out from a known vehicle with a VIN you can check is worth more than an untested unit. We list condition per unit rather than implying a blanket guarantee across the range.
The expensive mistake: buying before you identify
The most common way people lose money on an 8HP is not overpaying. It is buying the wrong code and discovering it at fitment.
Before you compare prices, identify your box properly. The model tag and stamped code are the two things that matter, and the tag does not tell you everything. Our ZF 8HP identification guide walks through exactly what to check and what the tag does and does not confirm.
If you already have a gearbox and need to know what it is, that guide is the fastest path. If you have a VIN and no gearbox, send us the VIN and we will narrow the options for you.
What the price does not include
Be clear on this before you budget, because it is where build costs blow out:
- Controller and harness. A swap needs a TCU solution. CanTCU, MaxxECU, TurboLamik and similar controllers are priced separately and vary significantly. See our CanTCU controller guide and the swap guides hub.
- Adapter and flexplate. If the box is going behind a non-BMW engine, this is a real line item.
- Cooling. An 8HP that runs hot will not last. Cooler, lines and mounting are part of the build budget.
- Tailshaft and driveline. Especially on AWD to RWD conversions.
- Freight. Gearboxes are heavy. Freight is quoted at checkout based on destination and weight, and it is not trivial.
How to buy one without getting burned
Work in this order and you will not end up with a gearbox you cannot use:
- Decide your power target and therefore your variant. Big power means 8HP76, not a discounted 8HP45.
- Identify the exact code your car or build needs.
- Compare boxes on kilometres and what is included, not on headline price.
- Confirm freight to your postcode before you commit.
- Budget the controller, cooling and driveline in the same conversation as the gearbox, not three months later.
Our ordering FAQ covers freight, lead times and what happens after you order.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a used ZF 8HP cost in Australia?
Currently A$2,500 to A$3,500 for an 8HP45 depending on kilometres, and A$8,000 to A$10,000 for an 8HP76. Price tracks kilometres, variant, included components and condition.
Is a cheaper 8HP45 a better deal than an 8HP76?
Only if your power target suits an 8HP45. For genuine 1000HP and above builds, the 8HP76 is the correct starting point and buying the cheaper box costs more overall.
Does the price include a torque converter?
It depends on the listing. Confirm what is included in the crate before ordering, because converter, mechatronics and harness change the total significantly.
Can you confirm fitment before I buy?
Yes. Send your VIN or a photo of the gearbox tag and we will narrow the correct variant. A VIN or part number helps us check, but final fitment responsibility sits with the buyer, so confirm before ordering.
Do you ship 8HP gearboxes Australia wide?
Yes. Freight is calculated at checkout on weight and destination. Gearboxes are heavy items, so factor freight into your budget from the start.
