Built 8HP Gearboxes & Build Packages
Built ZF 8HP gearboxes and build packages for Australian conversions, listed in one place. This is the range for builds that are going past what a standard used 8HP is expected to do: fully built Stage boxes from Built8HP, Dodson build packages rated in the package name itself, the billet options that go inside a built box, and complete conversion packages where the gearbox arrives as part of the job.
If you are still choosing a base transmission, start with the ZF 8HP gearboxes collection and its recorded-kilometre listings. This collection is the step after that decision.
Used gearbox or built gearbox?
A used 8HP is the right answer for a lot of conversions. A built box is the answer when the power target, the use case or the condition of the donor unit means a standard box is the weak link. The difference is not marketing, it is what happens inside the transmission under load.
Work out the torque and use case before you pick a stage, because the stage you need is set by the build, not by the price. The 8HP70 vs 8HP90 torque limits guide and the guide to choosing a ZF 8HP both work through that decision in detail.
Built8HP stage builds
Built8HP is listed as four stages: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 3+. Each stage is its own listing and each listing states what that build includes, so read the one you are buying rather than assuming the stages scale in a fixed way.
- Fitment: a stage build is built on your existing ZF 8HP gearbox or on a donor unit supplied by 8HP.Shop. That choice is worth settling before you order, because it decides what you are sending and what you are receiving.
- Control and wiring: a built box still needs a controller, harness and converter strategy. Building the transmission does not remove the electronics decision.
- Confirm the base: gearbox model, engine, vehicle and controller compatibility all need to be confirmed against the listing before purchase.
Dodson build packages
Dodson packages are listed in three tiers, with the rating carried in the package name: Sportsman 800Nm+, Pro 1200Nm+ and Pro Max 1400Nm. Each package is a clutch kit plus full box rebuild labour, listed for ZF 8HP51 and ZF 8HP76 (Gen 3) gearboxes.
- The converter is supplied inside a Dodson package, so it is not charged again on top. If you are comparing a Dodson package against buying the clutch kit and the labour separately, the package is the complete path.
- Rated figures belong to the package you are buying. Confirm the number on the listing rather than generalising across the tiers.
Individual Dodson clutch kits and 8HP hard parts live in the internals, clutches and Dodson parts collection.
Billet options for a built box
These are the internal upgrades listed as Built8HP options, for builders assembling a build around a stage or specifying exactly what goes into it.
- Billet torque converter and billet main shaft, listed for Built8HP Stage builds and for ZF 8HP51 and ZF 8HP76 (Gen 3).
- Billet deep transmission pan for ZF 8HP70 / 8HP75, and a separate listing for ZF 8HP90 / 8HP95.
- Seal rebuild kit for ZF 8HP service and rebuild work.
Cooling is part of the same decision. The cooling and filtration collection lists pans, cooler adapters and heat control, and the 8HP cooling guide explains why heat is the quiet failure in a high-power build.
Complete conversion packages
Where the gearbox and the conversion are bought together, the package is listed as one item. The Toyota 1VD-FTV to ZF 8HP conversion package covers that engine into an 8HP conversion as a single purchase. For a different engine or chassis, the engine adapter kits collection and the 8HP swap guides are the right starting points.
Installation and rebuild labour
If you would rather the work be done than done yourself, the Done-For-You installation package and the full box rebuild labour are listed alongside the parts. Both sit in the done-for-you services collection with the individual service lines.
What to confirm before ordering
- The gearbox you are building on, including model and generation.
- Your power and torque target, and the use the car actually gets.
- Whether the box is your existing unit or a donor supplied by 8HP.Shop.
- The controller, harness and converter decision, which is separate from the build.
- Cooling, output flange and driveline, planned with the build rather than after it.

Built 8HP questions
What is the difference between a used 8HP and a built 8HP?
A used gearbox is sold as a recorded-kilometre unit and is the right starting point for many conversions. A built gearbox has had its internals upgraded for a higher power target or a harder use case. The build stage or package name tells you which tier you are buying.
Do I need to send my own gearbox for a Built8HP stage build?
Not necessarily. A stage build is built on your existing ZF 8HP gearbox or on a donor unit supplied by 8HP.Shop. Which path applies decides what you send and what you receive, so confirm it before ordering.
What does a Dodson build package include?
Each Dodson package is a clutch kit plus full box rebuild labour, listed for ZF 8HP51 and ZF 8HP76 (Gen 3), with the rated figure carried in the package name. The converter is supplied inside the package rather than charged again on top. Check the individual listing for the tier you are buying.
Does a built gearbox still need a controller?
Yes. Building the transmission does not change how it is commanded. A controller or TCU, a harness and a converter strategy are still part of the conversion.
Can I buy the billet internals without a full stage build?
Billet options such as the torque converter, main shaft, deep pans and seal rebuild kit are listed individually, so you can specify exactly what goes into a build. Check the fitment note on each listing, because the pan listings are split by gearbox family.
Which gearbox should I build on?
That is set by your torque target and use case rather than by price. The 8HP70 vs 8HP90 torque limits guide and the guide to choosing a ZF 8HP both work through it, and the ZF 8HP gearboxes collection lists what is currently available as a base.
What should I send if I am not sure what suits my build?
Engine, vehicle, gearbox model and generation, power target and intended use. With those the right stage or package can be matched to the build instead of guessed.
