Code défaut BMW 4E87 : signification et réparation
4E87 · 8HP diagnostic · BMW fault code · EGS · transmission fault
If your BMW is storing fault code 4E87, you are looking at a transmission-related fault logged by the EGS (electronic transmission control) module. The code number alone does not name the failed part — 4E87 belongs to the EGS fault family, and the correct fix depends on the model, the gearbox and the other codes stored alongside it.
What is 4E87?
4E87 is a fault code stored in the BMW EGS module. It appears on 8HP-equipped cars and earlier 6HP/ZF gearbox generations depending on the model. Buyers and workshop owners see it after a scan with INPA, ISTA or a BMW-compatible diagnostic tool. The important thing to understand: a code like 4E87 is a starting point, not a parts list.
How to read it properly before buying anything
- Scan with INPA or ISTA (generic readers often miss EGS codes or report them as generic P-codes).
- Record all stored codes — 4E87 rarely travels alone. The combination tells you more than the single code.
- Capture freeze-frame data: driving condition, gear engaged, fluid temperature and voltage.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition first. Low fluid or burnt fluid changes the whole diagnosis.
- Check wiring and connectors at the mechatronic unit and TCU before condemning internal parts.
What to check on the gearbox
Depending on what the full scan shows, common areas to inspect are the mechatronic unit and valve body, solenoids, torque converter, clutch drums and the wiring harness from the transmission to the control unit. If the gearbox is part of a swap or conversion, verify the TCU and harness match the gearbox hardware — a mismatch produces EGS faults that no internal part will fix.
For 8HP swaps specifically, the controller and harness setup is where most electrical faults are born. See our TCU controllers and harnesses range and the 8HP parts catalog for compatible options.
Do not buy parts from a code alone
We see buyers order a valve body or torque converter off one fault code and still have the same fault after fitting it. Read the codes as a set, check the basics, and confirm the actual failure before spending. Our guide to 8HP diagnostic codes walks through exactly this thinking.
