TurboLamik Adaptations: What They Do, Why They Matter and When to Reset

TurboLamik Adaptations: What They Do, Why They Matter and When to Reset

TurboLamik adaptations are clutch learning values, not gear learning values. The TCU adapts on a per-clutch basis rather than a per-gear basis, which means there is no adaptation for every shift from 2 to 8. Only certain shifts are used to learn each clutch, and the adaptation exists so the TCU can calculate the correct pressure on the clutches.

That one design decision explains most of what surprises people about adaptation: why some shifts teach nothing, why the "A" indicator comes and goes, and why adaptation is worthless if the torque value the TCU sees is wrong.

Which shift teaches which clutch

The manual lists the shifts used for each clutch adaptation. Four clutches learn on upshifts, and one learns only on a downshift.

Shift Clutch adapted
3 to 4 upshift D clutch
4 to 5 upshift C clutch
5 to 6 upshift E clutch
6 to 7 upshift A clutch
6 to 5 downshift B clutch

The B clutch adaptation is not learned on upshifts because it is never applied in order to shift up. It can adapt during the 6 to 5 downshift.

If you want complete coverage, you need qualifying shifts in both directions. Sitting at a steady speed and letting the box shift up and down through the same two gears will not touch every clutch.

The adaptation activation parameter

In TunerPro, the ADAPTATION page shows the ADAPTATION ACTIVATION PARAMETER. This is the current status of the adaptation program. Each code tells you why adaptation is or is not running.

Code Meaning
0 Conditions met to start adaptation, LCD displays the letter "A"
1 Engine or gearbox torque too high (above 180 Nm)
2 Engine or gearbox torque too low (below 55 Nm)
4 TPS too low (below 2%)
5 Engine speed too high (above 3200 RPM)
6 Engine speed too low (below 1600 RPM)
8 Car driving too short
9 Gearbox in sport mode, up shift mode different from "0"
10 Gearbox oil temperature too low (below 55 C)
11 Gearbox oil temperature too high (above 80 C)
12 Gearbox in limp mode
13 Active gearbox faults
14 Gear less than three
15 Gear greater than the eight
16 Adaptation disabled in the program

The manual notes that the values in brackets are subject to change in any software revision and may not be accurate. Treat the code meanings as a guide and confirm the current figures against your software version.

Reading this parameter is faster than guessing. If the "A" is not showing, the activation parameter tells you which condition is blocking it.

The conditions you have to meet in practice

The manual reduces the parameter list to a short practical checklist:

Requirement Target
Oil temperature 55 to 80 C, optimal around 60 C
Drive mode Normal drive mode, not sport mode
Warm up Drive the car for about 3 minutes before starting
Torque window "A" is displayed when engine torque is in the range of about 80 to 140 Nm
Shift point Change gears up when engine speed is about 2000 RPM
Sequences About 20 sequences

The letter "A" is displayed only when conditions are met for proper adaptation. As you drive, you will notice it does not display all the time. When you change gear, the letter "A" must be displayed for that shift to count.

The procedure, step by step

  1. Get the gearbox oil into the 55 to 80 C window. Around 60 C is the sweet spot.
  2. Stay in normal drive mode. Sport mode blocks adaptation because the up shift mode is different from "0".
  3. Drive for roughly 3 minutes before expecting anything to register.
  4. Watch for the "A" in the upper right corner of the display. It only appears when the conditions are met.
  5. Change up when engine speed is about 2000 RPM, keeping torque in the 80 to 140 Nm range so the "A" stays visible.
  6. Repeat for the qualifying shifts. Aim for about 20 sequences.
  7. Keep an eye on the ADAPTATION ACTIVATION PARAMETER in TunerPro if the "A" is not appearing, so you know which condition is failing.

The shifts you are trying to complete are the four upshifts (3 to 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 7) and the 6 to 5 downshift if you also want the B clutch to learn.

When to reset adaptations

Resetting is a specific procedure, not a general "clear faults" action. The manual gives the steps:

  1. For reset adaptation, read the configuration from the TCU.
  2. Write 0 to all cells in the adaptation maps.
  3. Tick Save Parameters, then "Send Adapt. (Clone TCU)" and send the config to the TCU.
  4. Untick "Send Adapt. (Clone TCU)" and resend to the TCU.

The note that comes with this is important. By default, after sending the configuration to the TCU, the adaptations are not replaced. "Send Adapt. (Clone TCU)" allows you to overwrite adaptations. You should disable this option to avoid accidentally overwriting the adaptation when configuring the TCU.

That default behaviour catches people out in both directions. Leave it ticked while you make routine configuration changes and you can wipe learned values without meaning to. Untick it and a deliberate reset will simply not take effect.

Why adaptation needs correct torque first

Adaptation exists to calculate the correct pressure on the clutches. The input that drives that calculation is the torque value the TCU sees. If the torque value is wrong, the values the TCU learns describe a gearbox that does not exist.

This is why the torque window appears in the activation table. Code 1 blocks adaptation when reported torque is above about 180 Nm, and code 2 blocks it below about 55 Nm. The TCU is refusing to learn from a condition it cannot trust.

Set the torque calculation up correctly, confirm it at idle, and only then run the adaptation sequence. Adaptation is the second job, not the first.

Adaptation settings you can disable

Code 16 in the activation parameter list is worth knowing about: adaptation disabled in the program. If a program has adaptation switched off, no amount of good driving will produce learning. If you are following every condition and still seeing nothing happen, check the program itself before assuming a hardware problem.

Frequently asked questions

Are TurboLamik adaptations per gear or per clutch? Per clutch. The manual states adaptation takes place on a per-clutch basis, so only certain shifts are used to learn each clutch rather than every shift.

Which clutch is not learned on upshifts? The B clutch. It is never applied in order to shift up, so it adapts during the 6 to 5 downshift instead.

Why does the "A" keep disappearing? The "A" only shows when every condition is met. Torque outside roughly 80 to 140 Nm, engine speed outside 1600 to 3200 RPM, TPS below 2%, oil temperature outside 55 to 80 C, sport mode, limp mode or active gearbox faults will all hide it. The ADAPTATION ACTIVATION PARAMETER tells you which one.

How many adaptation sequences should I do? About 20 sequences, with the "A" displayed during each qualifying shift.

How do I reset the adaptations? Read the configuration from the TCU, write 0 to all cells in the adaptation maps, then tick "Send Adapt. (Clone TCU)" and send. Afterwards, untick it and resend.

Will adaptations overwrite themselves when I change the config? No, not by default. The manual notes that sending the configuration does not replace adaptations unless "Send Adapt. (Clone TCU)" is enabled. Leaving it unticked protects your learned values.
